KING: Carol Ann King passed away early Thursday morning February 2, 2012 after a long battle with diabetes in Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. She leaves behind her husband Hugh; two sons Mike and Ian (Jesslyn) and daughter Allison. She also leaves behind her sister Lorna Lang; brother Don (Joan)Gates, sister-in-law Colleen Gates; nieces and nephews Paul, Scott, Aaron, David, Russel, Eric, Brenda, Sandy and Melissa in addition to a very close-knit family as well as thousands of people she touched throughout the course of her forty two year career as an RPN. Carol was predeceased by her parents Alex and Doris Gates; brothers Jim (Peg) and Rick Gates also her nephew Danny Lang. She was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on October 26, 1945 and graduated from Carberry High School, proceeding directly to the Brandon Mental Health Centre where she became a registered psychiatric nurse. Upon completion of her degree, she travelled to Alberta and worked in the Foothills Hospital. Accepting what we can only assume was a lucrative deal; she agreed to move to Thompson, where she met her husband Hugh. They were married in Brandon on May 9, 1970, where she was then working at the Brandon Mental Health Centre. Carol had a love for baseball and she started playing for a women's fastball team with her sister Lorna when she was in her mid twenties. She played throughout her life playing for a number of teams. Her brothers and sisters started a family team in 1982 and were part of the mixed softball league of Brandon from where she retired her baseball career in 1996. She was an avid golfer as well and this is where you would find her during the day. Throughout her life Carol was the glue that held our family together, trusted and respected by all. She was a problem solver and was always looked to for guidance. Upon her retirement she was awarded a plaque from her co-workers that said "Carol, the one with the most common sense answer." Whether it was singing a Christmas carol or filing an income tax return, Carol was the one who was needed. A true matriarch, who is irreplaceable and will be missed by all. Family and friends are invited to share their memories at a come and go memorial reception held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, Brandon on Friday, February 17, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire donations in memory of Carol may be made to the ALS Society or Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
