CARTLIDGE: Vera Elizabeth (Bessie) Cartlidge (nee Canning). On Monday, May 14, 2012 our beloved mother Vera Elizabeth Cartlidge passed away at the Souris District Hospital. She was born November 25, 1915 on the farm in Deleau, Manitoba to Margaret Isabelle (nee White) and ErmineStanley Clive Canning. She attended school in Deleau and Carroll. In 1935 she began her career in nursing at the Souris Hospital graduating as an RN in 1938. After a long and rewarding career she retired from the Souris Hospital as Director of Nursing in 1980. Subsequently, she was employed by Victoria Park Lodge for a number of years. She was also active in the St. Lukes Anglican Church where she played the organ for forty eight years as well as being very involved in the community with the Rebecca Lodge, the ACW, and many other organizations. She was predeceased by her husband Reginald Cartlidge and her two sisters; Marguerite Doreen Cox and Wilna Mae (Billie) McIntosh. She is survived by her daughter Linda Heape (Wayne), her son Bruce Cartlidge (Myrna), five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Bessie is also survived by Brother-in-law Bob McIntosh and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Souris St Lukes Anglican Church Memorial Fund or to the Souris Nurses Education Fund c/o Souris Hospital. Funeral service was held on Friday May 18, 2012 at St. Lukes Anglican Church with Rev. Mark Murray officiating. A private interment was held in the Souris & Glenwood Cemetery.
