COX: Hazel Mary Cox, age 94, passed away peacefully at the Souris and District Personal Care Home on May 19, 2012. Hazel was born October 24, 1917 to Jack and Maggie Gillespie in the Glenvale District. She received Grade 1-9 at the Glenvale School. At the age of 16 she went out to work as a helper in private homes. She married James Venning (Bud) Philp on May 27, 1937 in Souris and they farmed together in the Beresford District until his death in April 1970. She married George Cox March 20, 1976 and they farmed until they retired to Souris. Hazel was a hard worker, inside, outside and in the community. She was an avid curler and took an active role in all community events; worked with the Sunday School as secretary-treasurer, served on the local school board and was a lifetime member of the U.C.W. She is survived by her daughter Frances (Lorne) Radcliffe, son Dennis (Betty) Philp and daughter Sharon (Ray) White as well as grandchildren Terry (Melanie) Radcliffe, Wendy (Bruce Kingdon) Radcliffe, Twyla (Jodi) Anderson, Jason (Leonie) Philp, Tim (Arloe Scott) Philp ; Ross (Annelore) White, Brian (Jewel) White and great grandchildren Connor, Tegan, Alison, Bryton, William, Jodi Jr., Madison, Hannah and Coral. Also step grandchildren Susan, Erin, Steven and their families; nephews Ivan Stewart, Donald (Kim) Gillespie, Gordon (Donna) Gillespie and nieces Cheryl Weisner and Joanne (Rick) Rinholm. Hazel was predeceased by her husbands Bud (1970) and George (2008); an infant son John Kenneth (1947) and her parents Jack and Maggie Gillespie, her sisters Irene Wright, Edna (Tom) Stewart, Edith Gillespie and her brother, William (Esther) Gillespie, daughter-in-law Shirley Philp, nephews Gordon Stewart and Barry Philp and nieces Maureen Wright and Karen Philp. She will be missed by all of us but she has left us all with a legacy to live up to each day. Funeral services were held on Friday, May 25 in St. Paul’s United Church in Souris wit Rev. W. Rankin officiating, followed by internment at the SourisGlenwood Cemetery. Kowalchuk's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
