LUNG: On July 3, 2012, at Fairview Home, our precious Mom, Grandma and GreatGrandma passed away in the arms of her family. Marie was born March 31, 1931 in the Arawana District; the youngest of four children to Avery and Pearl Chapple. She grew up with her two sisters and brother on the family farm. The family later located to Virden where Marie attended Virden High School. After graduating from the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, Marie began her nursing career in the Elkhorn Hospital. While in nursing training Mom met the love of her life, Johnny Lung. They were married at her parent's home in Elkhorn, September 5, 1953. They began their life together in the Dand district where Dad acquired a small farm and operated Dand Motors. Mom continued nursing at the Hartney Hospital. The Lungs resided at the "More" farm where twins, Louise and Lorna, were born (1954). The family then moved to a little three-room home known as the "Shanty", which Mom and Dad built themselves. Mom eventually gave up her nursing career to dedicate her time to the twins and to Dad's farming endeavours. After several short moves to Hartney, Deloraine and Virden, the Lung family returned to the farm and garage in Dand. Two more children arrived, Karen (1961) and Peter (1964), completing the Lung family. Mom devoted her life to Dad's work, her children and community. She sang in the Dand United Church choir, was a member of the UCW, and was also a leader of Explorers and Messengers. The Dand years were filled with the young Lungfamily working together though hardships and good times. Countless hours were spent delivering lunches, driving kids to music festivals, field days and swimming at Chain Lakes. Mom had an appreciation for the "simple things in life". She enjoyed walking the hills with her children looking for wild flowers, family picnics and singing with Dad as he played the accordion to the music she so loved. In 1966, Mom and Dad moved their family to an acreage in the Brandon Hills. With no running water, an unfinished house, and acres of weeds, the Lung family worked for years building and planting to make the "Ranch" their family home. Mom put her heart and soul into hard work such as pouring cement, roofing, mowing acres of grass, and shovelling snow by hand at 5:00 a.m. for Dad to get to work. Many times, Mom would stay up late cooking and baking for family and neighbourhood gatherings. Lucky for everyone, the cookie jar was always full! Family get-togethers were Mom's most treasured times. Her grandchildren were as special to her as she was to them. She was their best friend, confidante and mentor. They loved to be with her at the Ranch whether it was work or play. Mom lost her belovedJohnny in 1994. It was her love of the outdoors, her birds and the flowers, and her family coming home that kept Mom at the Ranch for ten more years. In 2004, Mom moved to Brandon where she continued to enjoy life with her family. The last three years of Mom's life proved to be difficult as her health started to fail her. After a lengthy stay at the Brandon RHA, Fairview became Mom's home in 2010. The family extends their most humble and heartfelt thanks to the Nursing Staff at Fairview for the care you gave to Mom and the compassion you showed. We will always remember your kindness. Left to cherish Mom's memories are Louise (Craig) Hourie; Lorna McKenzie; Karen (Dave) Wall and Pete (Gillian Speelman) Lung; grandchildren Nick (Deb) Hourie; Bobby (Rebecca MacRae) Hourie; Andrew (Jodie) McKenzie; Brae (Lloyd) Drummond; Brittany (Steven Melnyk) Wall; Grant Wall; Bayley and Amy Kerbis; great- grandchildren, McKayla and Brooklyn Hourie, and Paige andNathan Drummond.
