SALER: Louis George Saler, beloved husband of Elaine, passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, July 25, 2012 at the age of 86 years in the Minnedosa District Hospital. He was born June 11, 1926 in Velke Pole, Czechoslovakia and immigrated to Canada August of 1932. Lou was the oldest son of Mattie and Johanna Saler, who had settled in the Riverdale District. Lou met his wife Elaine Knight in Winnipeg and they were married on April 19, 1952. Shortly after their marriage, they bought a farm just up the hill from his father's farm and it was there they farmed for 52 years before retiring to Minnedosa in 2003. Lou built a successful caterpillar business which he operated for approximately 30 years while farming as well. Lou enjoyed many years camping with family and friends, farming and running the "Cat" and in his later years wintering in both Victoria, B.C. and Weslaco, Texas. He was an active member of the Rapid City Oddfellows Lodge and served many years on the Board of the Rapid City United Church. After retiring to town, he joined the Minnedosa Legion and spent many hours enjoying cards with friends at the local Senior Center. Lou was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Lawrence and Andrew, half brother Alfred, sisters Mary, Victoria, Irene and brother-in-law John. Lou is survived by his wife of 60 years Elaine, sons Rick (Sheryl), Randy (Cindy), daughter Joanne (Ken) Landry; six grandchildren, Melissa (Michael) Grenier, Matthew (Adrienne) Saler, Travis (Marie-Pier) Saler, Regan (Joel) Bouwman, and Wyatt and Shaela Landry; great grandchildren, Evander Grenier and Brooklyn Bouwman. Also left to mourn are his brothers Vincent, Emil (Sally), Tony (Linda) and numerous nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held in Minnedosa United Church on Tuesday, July 31 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Barb Jardine officiating, iterment followed in the Minnedosa Cemetary. Matthew Saler carried his grandpa's urn and the rest of Lou's grandchildren served as honorary pall bearers. Interment followed in the Minnedosa Cemetary. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to Minnedosa Regional Events Centre or a charity of your choice. A special thank you to all health care staff, home care staff and volunteers from palliative care who cared for Lou/Dad as well as the many friends and family who provided comfort and support during Dad's final days. Minnedosa Funeral Service was in care of arrangements.
