GAWIUK: Lena Gawiuk of Brandon passed away on September 4, 2012 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 89 years. Lena was born and raised in Oakburn, Manitoba to Frances and Wasyl Boychuk and attended Rogers School near Oakburn. In November 1945 she married Paul Gawiuk and they lived and raised their children in Elphinstone. They were both actively involved in their community and church. In 1983 Paul and Lena moved to Brandon. Lena's many passions included curling, sewing, needlecrafts, singing in the choir, entertaining and traveling. She was active in volunteering and fundraising in her community. She enjoyed gardening and loved to prepare and host traditional family meals at Christmas and Easter. Lena showed tremendous strength and courage throughout her illness. Her final days were spent surrounded by the family she loved so dearly. Lena will be sadly missed by: daughters Gloria Worth of Toronto and Donna (Dave) Kimpinski of Brandon; son Rod Gawiuk of Olds, AB; grandchildren SherryWorth, Jesse (Lacey) and Joel (Jen) Gawiuk, and Kristin, Kory and Kurtis Kimpinski; great grandchildren Kenny (Miranda) Worth, Jackson and Jayme Gawiuk and great great granddaughter Aries; sisters Rose Tutkaluk and Martha (Steve) Lazaruk; brothers Morris (Alice) Boychuk and John Boychuk; sister-in-law Olga Boychuk and many nieces and nephews. Lena was predeceased by her parents, husband Paul, great granddaughter Angel Gawiuk, great great grandson Dexter Worth, brother Harry Boychuk, brother-in-law Mike Tutkaluk and sister-in-law Pearl Boychuk. Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, September 10, 2012 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Celebrant was Rev. Fr. Michael Tkachuk. Cantor was Stella Fedeniuk. In memory of Lena, donations may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for the Palliative Care Unit or Brandon RHA Cancer Services at 150 McTavish Avenue E., Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
