STEEN: Lois Geraldine Eaton Steen passed away Nov 9, 2012 at Birch Lodge, Hamiota with family by her side. Mum was born June 28, 1918 the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Doupe of Crandall where she received her schooling. On the farm she did her share of field work, stooking, stacking hay, pitching sheaves. Mum was fond of all sports, especially softball, played every position but loved and was an excellent pitcher. In 1941, mum married Ernest Rinaldo Steen and they farmed at Oak Lake until dad joined the forces in 1943. They had two children Marjorie (Mardie) and Mickey. Dad died at the age of 28, 1948 leaving mum to raise two small children. Mum worked in a café in Oak Lake for a time then returned to Crandall to be with family, working different jobs, then was lucky to get a housekeeping job for Dunc and Ken Smith. Mum was in the choir, worked with the messengers for 14 years, taught Sunday school, CGIT, attended W.M.S. and U.C.W. meetings. Mum and Ken moved into Hamiota in 1980 where she continued an active roll in church activities, but never forgetting her Crandall roots. Ken passed away in 1997. Mum missed her sister Marge Stevenson who passed away in 2005. Mum hardly missed an event involving her grandchildren, great grandchildren and any other grand children in the community, thus becoming Grandma Steen to many. When her health started to fail she moved to Lilac Residence enjoying her years there. When unable to help herself anymore mum made the decision to move into Birch Nursing Home. Mum lived a very active life until that time. Although mum had a lot of hardship in her 94 years, she met it with strong faith and great courage to make the best of each day. Mum was very proud of being a Mum, Grandma, Great Grandma, Great Great Grandma and Auntie. We will miss her; and her saying You made my day!
