ENGLISH: With her family by her side Verla Marie English (nee Loney) passed away peacefully on February 6, 2013. She was born in Neepawa, Manitoba in 1929 and moved to Shoal Lake in 1931. Verla spent her youth enjoying music. She sang in the church choir and in talent shows. Verla and her family had good times at their Sandy Lake cabin in the summer, along with skating in the winter. Verla attended the University of Manitoba in 1947 and then attended normal school where she received her teaching certificate. During this time she met James Francis English and after four years of courtship, they were married in 1953. Verla left her teaching job in McDonald, Manitoba and they then resided in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Verla was a substitute teacher and a homemaker. Their first daughter, Cheryl Lee was born in 1957 followed by James Laurie in 1961 and Janis Colleen in 1962. Verla and Jim moved to Brandon in 1963. Verla continued to substitute teach as her children grew up and then opened a licensed daycare where she cared dearly for many children. Some of these families became lifelong friends. Verla continued to enjoy family and friends her whole life. She worked hard in their home and often put her gift of hospitality to work caring for those around her. She enjoyed many crafts, decorating, gardening, and renovating rental properties with her husband, Jim. Verla became a member of P.E.O and was very involved in this organization for 40 years. She again made many friendships that continued until her passing. Verla had seven grandchildren; Dustin and Chris Wilson, Andrew and Nicole English, Jenna, Ryan and Katie Wade. She enjoyed and loved them dearly. Verla kept herself healthy and fit with walking, cross country skiing and more recently going to Curves. She loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to various places with her husband Jim and friends. Verla is survived by her husband, James Francis English; children, Cheryl Wilson, Laurie English, and Janis Wade (Dale); grandchildren, Dustin, Chris, Andrew, Nicole, Jenna, Ryan and Katie; and her sister, Georgina Shackleford. Verla was predeceased by her parents William and Eva Loney. The Service to celebrate Verla's life will be held at Trinity United Church, 1515 6th Street, Brandon on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Verla can be made to P.E.O.
