COATES: John Coates, February 20, 1926 - April 24, 2013. John was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1926, the only son of Herbert and Nellie Coates. He grew up in Brandon until joining the Royal Canadian Navy and serving his country in the latter years of World War II When the war ended, he returned to Brandon and married Glad Bruce, and together they raised their two sons, Greg and Chris. In the 1970s, Glad and John moved to Calgary where John continued in the insurance business. They spent many happy years in Calgary, and John eventually retired there. Sadly Glad died soon after his retirement, and a lonely John moved to the Dominican Republic to be near Chris and his family (and to work on his suntan). John was blessed with many happy years in the Dominican surrounded by friends, family, and a steady stream of Calgary and Brandon friends escaping winters wrath. He died in Puerto Plata on February 24, 2013 after a brief illness. John will be sadly missed by sons Greg (Pat) and Chris (Mady); grandchildren Jennifer (Jason), Christal, John, Allissa and Regan; and great-grandchildren Fallon and Sophia. There will be no Canadian service, but perhaps those who knew John could take this opportunity to hold him in their thoughts for a moment.
