CRAIG: On Friday, May 24th, 2013 at the Assiniboine Center, Frederick Fred William Craig passed away peacefully surrounded by family, with one last smile on his face. Fred was born into a family of thirteen in McCreary, Manitoba to Richard & Bertha Craig on October 14, 1932. He moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba after obtaining his Electricians Ticket, where he met & married the love of his life, Dora (nee Gauthier) on June 4th, 1955. While there, they had two daughters before the family moved to Carberry, Manitoba where Fred was employed at Carnation Foods. He changed jobs several times over the years, always striving to improve his & his familys lives. Fred obtained the position of Maintenance Supervisor at Canadian Oxy where he remained until his retirement in 1987. He then tried his hand in the foam insulation business, which he later sold. Never one to sit idle, he continued to keep himself busy as a jack-of-all-trades handyman and could usually be found tinkering in the garage. A gypsy at heart, he & Dora enjoyed several trips to visit family, which took them to Arizona as well as Mississippi. In 2011, Fred was diagnosed with lung cancer and after receiving radiation treatments to beat the disease, dementia had slowly set in, sending him into the Assiniboine Center in late March. His body developed an infection & shortly thereafter was placed in palliative care where a round the clock vigil with the family began. He was blessed with a family who loved him dearly: his wife, Dora; daughters Joann (Kerry) Moorehead & Susan (Jim) Andrey, and grandchildren Tyler Downey, Angela (Ray) Burgess, Joel Downey (Mira Culen), Aubrey Andrey (Nico Arellano) & Katelynn Downey. He also leaves to mourn two sisters, Jane Hughson & Merle (Ross) Dingwall as well as many nieces & nephews. Always supportive, Fred was a man who believed that family came first. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Augustines Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 with Rev. Fr. Jorge Mante, Celebrant. Interment followed at Brandon Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Assiniboine Center for the care and compassion Fred and the family received. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Fred may be made to the Alzheimers Society of Manitoba Westman Region, Unit 4B 457 9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 1K2.
