GRAY: On June 5th, 2013, 5 weeks before his 98th birthday, Alden E. Gray passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, with his devoted niece Karen at his bedside. Alden is survived by his sister Evelyn (Art), their children Ellen and Ed and their families, and his niece Karen Di Ubaldo and her sons Chris and Mark. Alden was predeceased by his parents Ed and Mary Ellen, his sister Eileen and brothers Henry and George. Alden was born on July 14, 1915 at Bradwardine, Manitoba. In 1932, the family moved to a farm in the Ryerson District north of Oak Lake. He farmed there with his brothers until his retirement in 1991, when they moved to Winnipeg. Alden was trained as a Bren Gun Operator in the South Saskatchewan Regiment during World War II. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe from 1942 to 1946. His Regiment was part of the Canadian Contingency that liberated Holland. He was awarded the France and Germany Star. Alden was the pillar of the family, noted for his tenacity and strong work ethic. Alden and his brothers worked well as a team, both on and off the farm, and he was always willing to lend the neighbours a hand. Alden possessed a sharp mind, a strong wit, a good sense of humour and loved to tell his stories. He had a great outlook on life and enjoyed every minute of it. He will be missed. Karen, Chris and Mark would like to express their sincerest ``Thanks” to the staff of Tower 6 at the Deer Lodge Centre for their excellent care and kindness shown to Alden. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, June 11th, 2013, at 2:30pm at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street in Winnipeg, with Rev. Scott MacAuley officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Brandon, MB. As an expression of sympathy, if friends so desire, donations in Alden’s memory may be made to a charity of their choice. 204-586-8044
