KENNEDY: It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gordon Elliott Kennedy of Forrest, MB on Sunday, July 28, 2013 one day short of his 83rd birthday at the BRHC. Gordon was born on July 29, 1930 in Springwater, SK. He attended Springwater school until he was 13 years of age and then he moved with his family to the farm at Forrest that his grandfather had homesteaded in 1879. Gordon attended Turriff School for a short time until he was 14 at which time the family moved to Hartney, MB. While in Hartney he attended school and worked at construction and farming jobs to begin saving for his own farm that he hoped to eventually purchase. After six years, the family returned to Forrest where Gordon and his brother Cecil took over the farm. In 1959, Gordon married Edna Grieve of Lauder, MB and they began their life together. They were blessed with three children, Sheryl, Karen, and Brian. In 1965, Gordon built a new house at Forrest with the help of his brothers where he lived until his passing. All his life, Gordon was active in many sports – curling, baseball, track, and hockey. One of his many accomplishments was placing second in the provincial 100 yard dash in 1946. Another highlight was curling with his two brothers and his father. He also enjoyed playing and coaching hockey over the years and was an avid Wheat King’s Fan. He rarely missed a Blue Jays Baseball Game or a curling game while relaxing in his recliner. Gordon had a love of growing things and got into the Greenhouse business and Market-gardening in the 80s. His pride and joy was caring for his yard and garden and tending to his crops. The annual May Long Family camping/fishing week-end often conflicted with spring seeding but Gordon rarely missed attending over the last 39 years. Another favorite pastime of his was his wood-carving. He spent endless hours creating treasures by hand for his friends and family to enjoy. Gordon loved his music: playing the piano, harmonica, and violin. It was a true gift he retained until his passing. During his farming years he loved getting away with his family on summer camping trips and during retirement he enjoyed wintering in warmer climates. Gordon was well known for his jokes and teasing and often retold amusing stories of his childhood. More than anything, Gordon loved his family and spent many hours with his grandchildren. Just this past winter he skated with his family at the Forrest rink and almost every day rain or shine you could spot Gordon walking around the Forrest district. He was predeceased by his parents Helen and Duncan, brothers Gerald and Leonard and sister-in law Lenore. Gordon will live on in the hearts of his wife Edna; daughter Sheryl (Drew) Livingston – Harmon, Mason, Greyson, Aislinn, and Evan of St. Claude; daughter Karen (Rene) de Delley – Chad and Cole of Forrest; and son Brian (Miho) – Marie, Alex and Seila of Calgary. Also left to mourn are a brother Cecil (Irene) of Forrest and a sister Lorna Marie (Orest) Yarema of Waterhen as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at Memories Chapel on Friday, August 2 with interment at Humesville Cemetery. Should friends so desire, donations are welcome to the Forrest United Church, Box 48, Forrest, MB R0K 0W0, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 3-824 18th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 5B7 or a charity of choice.
