HURD: Lorne Hurd of Brandon, father to Ray (Patsy) and Linda (Wayne) passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Born in Brandon on September 15, 1922, Lorne grew up in the east end and spent much of his youth hunting and fishing along the Assiniboine River. He attended King George School and graduated with a grade 11 education. Soon after finishing school, WWII broke out and he immediately enlisted in the army and joined the signal corps. After the war, he returned home and married the love of his life Bernice McLachlan. They were married in April 1946. For the first 25 years they lived in a small wartime house with a white picket fence with their two children, Ray and Linda. On their 25th wedding anniversary, Mom and Dad moved into their dream house on Christie Bay. Lorne worked at Manitoba Hydro from the late 1940s until he retired in 1979. For the first part of his career he worked in the meter department and after additional training became an electrical technician. He loved his job and developed many long-lasting friendships with his colleagues. Lorne was an excellent singer. He often sang “The Lord’s Prayer” at funerals and also belonged for a short-time to a barbershop quartet. He just loved sing-songs and could often be found around the piano with his buddies. Lorne loved playing golf, curling and horseshoes. One of his proudest moments in golf was the year he and his son won all the club competitions at the Sunnyside Golf Course and had their picture appear in the Brandon Sun holding all their trophies. He will perhaps best be remembered for his “green thumb”. Working in the yard was Dad’s passion. He spent hours of enjoyment in the flower gardens, cutting the lawn, or tending to his tomatoes. His yard was always the envy of the neighbourhood and he took great pride in his labors. Lorne was described by others as a nice guy, a kind and caring individual, a humble man, and a gentleman. He will certainly be missed by all those who knew him. He was predeceased by his loving wife Bernice of 66 years; his brothers Clarence and Alfie and sisters Ella and Elsie. He is survived by his children Ray (Patsy) and Linda (Wayne); granddaughters, Carmen Hurd (Bret) and Carey Whelpton (Jeff); great-granddaughters Anna and Natalie Whelpton as well as his sister Marlene Jaskow (Steve). Ceremony to Celebrate Lorne’s Life took place at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Rev. Chris Arthur officiated. Interment followed in the Veterans Section of the Brandon Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Lorne may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 3-824 18th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 5B7 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB R7A 2W8.
