PHILLIPS: Gillian Rosemary Joy Phillips of Brandon, died Monday, October 14, 2013 in her 80th year. Joy was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England. She first experienced life in Canada working at Union Station in Toronto and travelled throughout Canada and the U.S. with her friend Pam. Upon returning to England, Joy met her future husband, Canadian engineering student Don Phillips. They married in 1959 and started a family before moving to Canada. It was a long train ride from Montreal to meet Dons family in remote northwestern Ontario. The further they travelled, the deeper the snow got and Joy wondered what she had gotten herself into! She eventually embraced the long winters, enjoying downhill skiing, snow-shoeing, and tobogganing. Settling first in Ajax, and then Thunder Bay, where she lived for thirty years, Joy later moved west to be closer to her grandchildren in Brandon and Calgary. She enjoyed socializing with her neighbours and friends from bowling and her Live Yers group. Summers were spent with family at the cottage on Lake Superior and she frequently travelled to the U.K. and Toronto. Joy was pre-deceased by her husband Don, and brothers Garth and Ken. She leaves behind her three children, Karen Phillips, Kim Sutherland (Don), and Ian Phillips (Alexx Boisjoli), six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, as well as her brothers Tony and John, her sister Shirley, and numerous other friends and family in the U.K. and Canada. An informal gathering for friends and family will take place at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North, on Monday October 21, 2013 from 4 to 6 pm. Interment will follow at a later date in the U.K. Joy loved animals, especially dogs; in lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6, would be gratefully appreciated. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 204-727-0330.
