COLQUHOUN: Audrey Colquhoun died on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the age of 82 years, after an illness. Two of her daughters were with her. Much loved wife of Jim and beloved mother and grandmother. Audrey will be missed by sons Jim and Steve (Penny) and daughters Lynn (Spencer) Silver, Cheryl (Carson) Hobbs and Phyllis (Don) Morrison. Her family was a source of joy for Mum. As she and Jim welcomed grandchildren, Audrey found that Grandma was one of her favorite roles! Audrey loved her grandchildren Aimee (Wes), Travis (Jenna), Dustin, Drew, Brett, Anthony, Stacey, Evan and Justin and would have loved her great-grandchildren Levi, Sam, Halle and Hannah. Be it noted too that Audrey was very welcoming to her sons and daughter-in-law. Audrey was predeceased by her mother and father Earl and Alma Babcock, her brother Larry and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She leaves to mourn her sisters Noreen (Jim) Coates and Bernice Duff and her nephew Geret (Robb) Coates and Joshua. Audrey was the oldest of Earl and Alma’s four children. She was born on the family farm near Deloraine and built her life in the Deloraine area. Mum attended Kirkwood School and the Deloraine Collegiate. She then attended Normal School and taught before working as a telephone operator. Mum met Dad when she was four years old, they had their first date when she was 17 and married when she was 21. They were married for 61 years. Mum and Dad sold the farm in 1972 and moved into Deloraine in 1989. Wherever her children and grandchildren became involved so did Mum; figure skating, hockey, piano lessons and 4-H. In all of our endeavors Mum was chief cheerleader! Mum’s home was a source of pride. She and Dad continually renovated their home and loaned their expertise and experience as their children’s homes grew. Mum loved to sew (Figure skating costumes!) and knit. Her lovingly created and generously given afghans grace the homes of all of her children. A summer rental of a cottage at Lake Metigoshe convinced Mum and Dad such that in 1964 we moved into the cabin Dad built! Mum now had two homes to cheerfully maintain. And poison ivy discovered the Colquhoun children! As well her children’s friends were always welcome – to the point where Dad built a guest house at Metigoshe. At least one of Mum’s children was into her teens before she realized the degree to which Mum was afraid of the water. In the early 1970s, Mum returned to working outside of her home. The years she worked at Bren Del Win Lodge, at the Deloraine Memorial Hospital and as a school bus driver were very satisfying. Mum enjoyed her work and the people with whom she worked. Mum was committed to her community. Volunteering with the Deloraine millennium book committee, Congregate Meals, the United Church and the Health Auxiliary was important to Mum and she retired with regret. Mum spent the last years of her life as a resident at Bren Del Win Lodge. Our entire family thanks the staff who gave Mum warm and compassionate care during the last years and especially the last weeks of her life. Mum, not a day will go by when a happy memory of you fails to spark a smile. You are safe in a warm, bright corner in each of our hearts. Your husband, children and grandchildren will miss you always. A Celebration of Mum’s life is planned for summer 2014. Smith’s Funeral Home, 204-747-2088 www.wheatlandfs.com
