GILLIS: August Edwin, “Ed” (January 20, 1924 – December 11, 2013) Passed away peacefully at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. Ed was born in Wynyard, Saskatchewan and spent the majority of his life farming on the family farm north of Wynyard. He spent a couple years in the 1940’s working on the construction of the Alaskan Highway before returning to the farm. Ed’s father passed away of Cancer at an early age and the family farm continued in conjuction with his Mother and 2 brothers, Bert and Roy. In 1969 he married Marilyn Gillis at a courthouse ceremony in Regina. His children, Koko and Pala were born in 1969 and 1971. In 2007 Marilyn and Ed finally retired from the farm and moved to Brandon to be closer to Pala’s growing family yeilding 5 of his 7 grandchildren. After Marilyn passed away in 2011 Ed moved to Victoria Landing in Brandon where he made several friends and participated in various activities, including spending time at the nearby Seniors for Seniors Center. Ed is survived by Koko (Jill) and grandsons Jaxon and Spencer from Guelph, Ontario and Pala (John) and grandchildren Rebecca, Daphne, Shane, Laura and Julia from Brandon, Manitoba. A service of memory will be officiated by Joe Ball on Saturday, December 14th at 10:30 am at the Knox United Church. Donations in memory of Ed may be made to Seniors For Seniors Co-op at 311 Park Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 7A4.
