BAILEY:Charles Allen (VE4LB) passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon, Manitoba after a short struggle with cancer. Charles was born in 1949 at the Boissevain Hospital. Charles attended the Ontario School for the Blind in Brantford, Ontario. He completed his grade 12 there in 1968. He then graduated from Boissevain Collegiate with a Manitoba grade 12 certificate. Charles attended Brandon University and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where he attained a B.A. with a major in communications. C.A. returned to live with his parents at the farm near Regent, where he produced a weekly one hour radio show for CJOB FM, Winnipeg. This show aired for a number of years starting in 1974. C.A. began his hobby as an amateur radio operator in 1974. In 1985, Charles and his father moved to Brandon. He continued his love of the airways as an active member of the Brandon Amateur Radio Club until his passing. He was a founding member of the MB Radio Museum at Austin, MB, and a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service Group. He became interested in, and joined, the Icelandic Canadian Club of Western Manitoba. Charles loved visiting, listening to his radio, riding on the train, playing crib and talking on his ham radio. Charles was predeceased by his mother Lillian Mary "Penny" Bailey in 1976 and his father Allen Asguer Bailey in 1991. He is survived by his sisters Doreen Verhelst (Maurice), Donna Staples (Doug) and nephews and nieces: Bruce Verhelst (Leslee, their children Jason and Tyson), Karla Bilous (Rick, their children Brennah, Rayna and Aubrey), Reagan Bromley (Bevan, their children Bailey, Lillian, Gavin and Reid), Adam Staples, Mark Staples (his children Bethany and Paris) and Brian Staples. He will be sadly missed by long time friends Lawrence Turner and Mark Breault, roommate Trevor Warniski, his amateur radio family, members of the Icelandic Club, and friends from many communities. A reception in honour of Charles will take place at Seniors for Seniors, 311 Park Avenue East, on Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
