HICKS: It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, and grandmother, Joy Doreen Hicks at Sturgeon General Hospital in St. Albert, Alberta on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her loving husband of over 60 years, Merton Hicks; parents Daniel and Elizabeth McDougall of Vancouver, and siblings Ina, Jack, and Phyllis. Joy is survived by their only son Mark and daughter in law Diane of St. Albert, Alberta, and their three children Kurtis, Kristopher, and Kathryn, all who live in Edmonton and St. Albert. Gail McIvor of Winnipeg, Joy’s niece, and her adult children Shelley and Bruce and their families are also left to mourn. Joy lived a very full life. She was born in Winnipeg August 26, 1928, the fourth and youngest offspring of Daniel and Elizabeth. Joy attended grade school and high school in Winnipeg. She continued to live there after school, where she met and married her husband Mert. They subsequently moved to Regina, where their son Mark was born, and finally Brandon, where Joy and Mert resided from 1958 until Mert's passing in 2010. Joy really enjoyed working in the jewelry business at Reesors alongside her husband Mert. She was an active member of the Brandon community for decades, happily involving herself in many community events. Joy was also very proud of her involvement with a small group of Brandon friends in the establishment of Brandosa Beach in Minnedosa. Joy has resided the past three years, until her passing, in St. Albert, Alberta to be close to her son Mark and his family. Joy will be remembered as a happy, fun loving woman who enjoyed life and was very proud of her family.
