BENOIT: Genevieve Antoinette Benoit (Nee Corniat) June 5, 1926 – February 23, 2014. Our wonderful mother and grandmother died peacefully on Sunday February 23, 2014 at the age of 87. She will be lovingly remembered by her four children Byrnes (Barb), Tanya (Tom Strike), Nicole (Norm Kenkel) and Mark; her nine grandchildren Rhys, Hailey, Benjamin, Zachary, Jonathan, Michael, Nadège, Samuel, Owen and her special nieces Donna and Marie. Genevieve was predeceased by her parents, her sister Evelyn, step-brother Walter, many other important relatives and friends, and her husband Ted. Genevieve was born and raised in Brandon Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg at the age of 18 to attend nursing school. She later studied in St. Louis Missouri. Genevieve highly valued education and was a life long learner. She achieved her Nursing diploma from St. Boniface School of Nursing, and both her Bachelor of Nursing and her Master of Social Work from the University of Manitoba. Genevieve was a forward thinking woman who balanced her career outside the home with the roles of wife, mother, daughter and friend with great success. She worked as a nurse, took time out to have her family and then taught nursing at the St. Boniface Diploma School of Nursing and the Misericordia School of Nursing. She worked as a social worker for the Children’s Aid of Winnipeg and was the first Director of Social Services at the Tache Nursing Home. She retired in 1982 as the Director of Social Work for the Winnipeg Municipal Hospitals (now Riverview Health Centre). Upon her retirement she worked diligently with Ted and Byrnes to establish Spectra Productions. Outside of the working world Genevieve was an ‘always-there-for-you’ mother and wife. She was generous with herself and her time. Ted was her great partner in life and together they loved to entertain. Their home was always the place for gatherings of family and friends. Genevieve loved to cook and made amazing dinners and pies and tarts. She loved music, knitting and crocheting, camping with the family in their house trailer and in the later years going on several cruises with Ted. The family would like to thank the staff and Home Care workers at the Shaftesbury Retirement Residence and the staff of West Park Manor for their kindness and care for Genie. A funeral Mass in celebration of Genevieve’s life will be held on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Brebeuf Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place. A reception will follow in the church hall.
