DORAN: Sylvia Patricia Doran (nee Hoover). Our family wishes to celebrate the life of Sylvia Patricia following a lifetime embraced in the art of living with grace, decorum and a highly tuned sense of humour. Her’s was a memorable life, building and crossing bridges that led her to pursue her own distinct talents. Sylvia passed from this earth on January 2, 2014 in Winnipeg. Sylvia, the only child of Gordon and Jessie Hoover, was born on May 4, 1922 and was raised in Melita. After completing high school, she accepted a position at the Royal Bank in Melita, then moving to Manitou, Lac Du Bonnet, Russell and eventually Birtle, the little valley town that would become her lifelong home until ill health necessitated a move to Winnipeg. In 1945, Sylvia married Nelson Doran, an Isabella farmer and entrepreneur. Together they raised four children, Harold, Claudia, Joyce and Lucinda, all of whom have gone on to pursue successful and creative endeavors. They where all a source of pride for their mother who delighted in their chosen life?paths, their partners, children and grandchildren. Each had a special place in her heart. As a child with no siblings, one of her greatest stated wishes was to ensure that she nourished the sense of family. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their dreams as she had pursed her own. The Doran home on Vine Street was the Town of Birtle’s museum until Sylvia spearheaded the establishment of the Birdtail Country Museum that was dedicated during the town’s centennial in 1984. Sylvia was also highly instrumental in the establishment of the local library. She believed in giving back to the community and her genuine care for others propelled her to step forth, ensuring that individuals and families new to the community felt the warmth of a sincere welcome. She enjoyed her time serving as a school trustee, United Church board member, Sunday School teacher, advisor to the provincial heritage committee and the joys and challenges as director of the junior church choir. She was recognized for her contributions and in turn was awarded The Women of Distinction for Community Service. Sylvia’s outgoing personality, even if unbeknownst to her, made her a person of interest. She saw the beauty in people, their value and worth as friends and “extended family”, befriending many. In this spirit, Sylvia was devoid of judgment and had an intense sense of compassion for those nearest to her heart. Sylvia was the “mensch” who could be counted on for understanding and acceptance. For her it was “all part of living”. She reveled in the fun of the themed birthday parties and soirées with friends and family. Her imagination and passion for entertaining with her eclectic assortment of china, silver, crystal and linens made everyone feel welcome and special. She was a keen reporter for the local newspaper, expressing her views on local issues. A naturally inclined historian, Sylvia was instrumental in writing, A View of the Birdtail, a history Of the Municipality of Birtle from 1878-1974. The onset of dementia in her later years was a challenge and frustration to Sylvia. Her ability to be an active and contributing member of society was significantly curtailed. She is now at peace once more. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents; husband Nelson, cousins and many dear friends who contributed to the quality of her lengthy and vibrant life. Left to treasure her are her children Harold (Judy), Claudia (Bob), Joyce, Lucinda (Brian), grandchildren Kate, Matthew (Alesha), Kelly, Chuck(Brittany), Emma (Robbie), Julie, Aaron and eight great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends that fell within her extended family circle. A celebration of the life of Sylvia Doran will be held on April 8, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Birtle United Church, interment to follow at Isabella cemetery. Should you wish to contribute in Sylvia’s memory donations can be made to The Birdtail Country Museum or the Birtle Food Bank.
