REEVES: The death of Austin Neil Reeves occurred at Riverdale Health Centre, Rivers, Manitoba on Sunday, March 23, 2014. Austin was born and spent his childhood at Oak Lake where he attended Oakwood School, playing baseball and hockey (the team won provincials in 1955 - 56), working with his Dad, going to movies, working on the Taylor farms and helping at his sister's ranch in northern Saskatchewan. He took a meat cutting course and worked at Safeway. In 1963, Austin married Carole Gordon and moved to Rivers, Manitoba. In 1965, he gained employment with the Department of Highways which lasted for thirty-three years. Austin played baseball with the Rivers Comets (a team that was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012) and he later was a player/coach with the Rivers A's. Austin was a faithful member/volunteer of Rivers Curling Club and also the golf club. His competitive nature was evident in all sports but especially in curling. He curled in super leagues and was challenged in every game. In his senior years he played hockey with Rivers Gators and Cardale Cougars who went to tournaments in Saskatoon and Red Deer many times. Austin is survived by his wife Carole, as well as his sister-in-law Pat Gordon, nineteen nieces and nephews, forty great and twenty-five great, great nieces and nephews. Neil had an outgoing personality and was friendly to all. His surviving friends of various ages will miss him dearly. Neil was predeceased by his parents, John and Faith, his nephew Bill MacDonald, brothers Harold and Bob, sisters Gwen, Betty and their spouses, as well as in-laws Wilfred, Velma, and Ron Gordon. For those who wish to attend, a Graveside Ceremony will take place at Oak Lake Cemetery on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 pm at the Oak Lake United Church. Rev. Glenna Beauchamp and Rev. Don Sellsted will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Austin may be made to Rivers and Area Palliative Care Committee, c/o Riverdale Health Centre, Box 428, Rivers, Manitoba, R0K 1X0 or to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9 or to a charity of choice.
