PENTLAND: Harriet Mary Pentland (nee Brownell) passed away at Valleyview Care Centre on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Harriet was born on February 25, 1918 in the Truro School district (Cameron Municipality) Lauder, Manitoba. She was the fourth child of Charles Edwin Brownell and Mary Ruth Brownell (nee Underhill). She attended school in Lauder until Grade Seven. The family moved to Kemnay, Manitoba during the depression years. After three years they bought a farm in the Wellwood and Carberry area. Harriet took her high school in Carberry then on to Wesley College for Grade twelve in Winnipeg. She tried the nursing course but after a year she decided it was not her calling so she moved on to a hairdressing course at Marvel in Winnipeg in 1940. After completing that in 1941 she worked at a beauty salon in Selkirk for a while. Then an opportunity came up to write the Federal Civil Service exams. She passed that and was able to move on to a position with the Bureau of Statistics in Ottawa. On April 14, 1942 she was married to Thomas Elton Wesley Pentland from Justice, Manitoba. Harriet took an active part in the community church. She was President of the U.C.W. and also Secretary Treasurer for two years and President of Women's Institute. She took a great interest in the Loyal Ladies Orange Lodge of Manitoba. in 1962 and 1963. She was Grand Mistress of the Orange Benevolent Association of Manitoba, traveling extensively from coast to coast. She also sat on the Board of Trustees for the organizations of the Orange Order in Winnipeg for forty years. Harriet was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary for many years and also a volunteer at the Gift Shop and Art Shop. She was a life member of the Brandon Regional Health Centre. She was an avid bowler and loved playing cards, Bridge and 500. Harriet had spent a few years in Florida and Texas. She was predeceased by her husband of nearly forty years, Thomas Wesley in September, 1981, father in 1969, mother in 1986, sister Kathleen Pigg in 1989, sister Helen Nielsen in 1997, sister Isabel McKay in 2003, brother Arthur in 1999, sister-in-law Melrose Brownell in 2012, brother-in- law Hubert McNac in 1979, brother-in-law Douglas Pigg in 2008, brother-in-law Keith McKay in 1984, brother-in-law Perry Cox in 1967, brother-in-law Richard Nielsen in 1998, and special friend Vivian Hales. Harriet is survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins and special friends Sandra Wilson and family, Bill Hales and family, Dennis and Cheryl Brugger and family. Funeral Ceremony was held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Barb Jardine officiated. Interment followed at the Sparling Cemetery. Pallbearers were Doug Kinney, George McPherson, Kevin Brugger, Gladden Smith, Alan Miller and Cameron Hales. Donations in memory of Harriet may be made to a charity of choice.
