HARKNESS: It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our loving mother, Shirley Kathleen Harkness (Fernell) on June 24th, 2014 at the age of 91. Shirley was born in Gainsborough, SK. on February 28th, 1923 to Myrtle and Percy Fernell of Carnduff, SK. She was one of eight children. Surviving Shirley are three siblings, Agnes Harkness, Pilot Mound, MB, Betty Biutenhouse, Thunder Bay, ON, Dave Fernell, High River, AB. Sadly left to mourn, but with many memories, is her husband of 65 years Lorne and her children, Bill (Judith, deceased), Melita, MB., Floyd (deceased) (Linda) of Calgary, AB, Larry (Donna), Brandon, MB., Lloyd (Shawna), Brandon, MB., Cheryl (John deceased), Crandall, MB., Shawna (Ralph), Winnipeg, MB. Shirley was blessed with 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. There was three sets of twins born in this family. Also many nieces and nephews who thought the world of her. She spent her early years working at various jobs, then joining the army for 4 years, in Regina, SK. taking her training to be a baker. She married Lorne on March 10th, 1949. She worked outside the farm for many years as a nurses aide in Brandon. After retiring, she helped Lorne with the Ayrshire cattle, big gardens, she raised Jack Russell Terriers for years, and children. No one went away from the farm hungry. Mom was respected and loved by all that know her. Shirley"s love in her life were her children, and grandchildren. She loved them all equally, never played favorites, and was always proud of each accomplishment, big or small. Known as “Granny” she was dearly loved by all of them, and will be forever missed by them. They will have great memories to talk over with each other. A private family service was held on June 28th, 2014 at the Alexander Cemetery which was followed by a lunch at Whitehead Hall. Kowalchuck’s of Souris held the service, with Reverend Wendy Rankin officiating. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Brandon’s local cat, dog rescue, “Funds for Furry Friends” as animals were mom’s passion and she was always concerned for their welfare.Message of condolence may be place at www.kowalchuks.netKowalchuk’s Funeral Home,Souris, MB.
