HASSARD: Martin B. (Marty) passed away on July 13, 2014 after a short illness with lung cancer. Beloved husband of Kathie and father of Chad (Kari), loving grandpa of Zachary Fullerton and Kamryn Hassard. Marty was born in Dauphin on August 19, 1954 to Mary and Mel Hassard. He was the second youngest of six children and the first son. He grew up on the farm at Valley River and went to school in Dauphin. Things were tough then and at 15 years old he quit school and went to work on the railroad in Northern Manitoba. His love of heavy equipment took him to Powell Equipment in Brandon where he fell in love with Caterpillar. He went on to Assiniboine Community College where he took the Heavy Duty Mechanic Trade and successfully completed his apprenticeship with Powell Equipment. He obtained his International Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate and went on to own his own brush cutting business. He worked for various companies including C&C Construction in Brandon for a number of years. Marty got tired of being cooked in the summer, frozen in the winter, and lying in puddles or snowbanks to fix equipment. In 2000, he started work as a Security Officer at BRHC. A few years later, he started in the Faculty of Engineering at BRHC, which he loved. Even after he became sick he just could not stay away from FES and made almost daily appearances. Marty bought an acreage in 1986 and enjoyed his pigs, goats, chickens, cattle, and a horse or two. He enjoyed helping and working on his friend’s farms and could often be seen baling or combining into the wee hours of the morning. He enjoyed his skidoo until he could not take the cold anymore. He put an incredible amount of work into developing his property. Marty married his first wife Carol Wynes in 1974. They were blessed with their son Chad in 1978. Marty married Kathie Fullerton in 2000 and became a stepfather. Marty was predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Mary Hassard and his brother-in-law Peter Wasylyshen. Besides his wife, son, and two grandchildren, he is survived by his stepchildren, Earl (Nicole Kerkowich) and Jayne Fullerton of Brandon, sisters Marilyn (Don) Kruger of Ashville, Margaret Wasylyshen, Maureen (Vic) Lesaichuk, and Mavis (Bob) Allum, all of Dauphin, and his brother Murray (Dale) of Winnipeg. Marty will also be fondly remembered by Carol Hassard (Cliff Penno) of Rivers, mother-in-law Agnes Stevenson, sister-in-law Pat Hancharyk, and brother-in-law John Stevenson of Swan River, and sister-in-law Carolyn (John) Killingbeck of Brandon. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Marty’s life will be held in the Grand Salon at the Victoria Inn on September 6, 2014 at 11:00 o’clock in the morning with lunch to follow. All who knew Marty are invited to attend.
