GULLETT: Elmer Robert Gullett of Killarney, Manitoba passed away peacefully at Bayside Personal Care Home on March 30, 2015 at the age of 85 after a long battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 20, 1930 at his grandfather Cowlthorpe’s farm, the eldest child of Fred and Ada Gullett. He grew up on the family farm in the Duncragg district with sister Jean and brother Marvin. After he finished school he rented land for one year and farmed, drove a grader for the RM of Riverside for a year and and worked for his uncle Ed Gullett driving a transfer truck. At this time he married Kay Moffatt, who was teaching at Duncragg. Elmer had always been quite mechanically inclined so he decided to buy Thiessen’s Garage and renamed it Gullett’s Esso Service which he and Kay ran until 1971 when they dos it to John Bomak. He also enjoyed buying old tractors, fixing them up and reselling them. While at Ninette, Elmer enjoyed curling, ski-dooing and some hunting when he found time. He then went to work for Chapman Motors in Killarney selling cars and enjoyed very much working with Glen and the other salesmen. He received many awards from General Motors. They decided to move to Killarney as Kay had also begun working part time at Chapmans as assistant book keeper. They built a new house and moved in 1973. Elmer stayed working at Chapman Motors until the garage closed and then began selling Fords for Frank Collyer at Collyer Ford in Killarney and worked there for many more years. He had earlier begun to take a keen interest in Standardbred racing and claimed his first mare Kalona Lou in 1979. He retired her from the track and raised foals under the Tellug name. He spent a great deal of time training them here at Killarney’s race track. Thus began the weekend racing circuit every summer. He had a fair amount of success over the years with most of his horses. As Elmer’s health began to deteriorate, he eventually had to give up his horses and the racing business. He just enjoyed meeting with the “coffee gang” every day he could at Kelby’s. Elmer was predeceased by his parents Fred and Ada Gullett, his brother in-law Herb Carrick and his niece Linda Frederickson, his wife’s parents Frank and Lillie Moffat and his brother in-law Elmer May. He is survived by his wife Kay, sister Jean Carrick, brother Marvin and wife Debra and their families, also brothers in-law Ken and wife Ruth, Hugh and wife Linda, and sister in-law Elaine May and their families. He thought the world of his nieces and nephews. Elmer’s funeral service was held on April 2, 2015 at Killarney United Church. He was buried in Killarney Cemetery. Wheatland Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
