DUTHIE: It is with much sadness that the family announces the passing of James "Jim" Ruthven Duthie on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Fairview Home, Brandon. Born May 7, 1922 in Hartney, Manitoba, the elder son of James Campbell and Ida Duthie, he loved the outdoors and all things Western, especially rodeos. Dad was educated in Melgund and Hartney schools; he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 serving mostly in the North Atlantic during WWII. Following the war, he began his career as a station agent for the CPR which took him to communities across Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Wherever he lived he made lifelong friends with whom he enjoyed going back to visit. He enjoyed traveling, square dancing, hunting and attending hockey and baseball games. Dads faith was an important part of his life and he was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, regularly attending services and actively supporting the church. He looked forward to the Brandon Retired Railroaders gatherings and the Mens Coffee group at First Presbyterian. He was a 65 year member of the Hartney and Brandon Masonic Lodges and rarely missed a meeting. Jim was predeceased by his parents, brother George and sister- in-law Helen, his first wife, Elizabeth in 1954, second wife Millie in 2002, grandson Christopher Nakonechny, stepson Tom Nakonechny and wife Gloria, and nephew Donald Duthie. Family meant everything to Jim. He leaves behind his son Jim (Pat) Duthie, daughters Joan (Morrie) Kilberg and Mary (Ted) Stanger. Also missing him dearly is a wealth of special grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. The Ceremony to Celebrate James' Life took place at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 24, 2015 with Rev. Dr. Dong-Ha Kim officiating. A private interment took place at the Brandon Cemetery. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring and loving staff of Fairview Home, and also to the Brandon Wheat City Masonic Lodge. Should friends and relatives so desire, donations in memory of Jim may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or the Arthritis Society, Suite 105 - 386 Broadway Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3R6 or to a charity of choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
