POLNICK: On Saturday, November 28, 2015, Christine Polnick passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Born on January 10, 1926 in Lubien, Poznan, Poland, Christine's education and childhood were cut short when she was taken from her home by the German Army, being forced to labour on a farm in Germany. After the war ended, Christine worked at a refugee camp as a secretary processing people to new destinations. In 1947, Christine immigrated to Canada with a group of other young Polish women, eventually getting by rail to North Brandon, where she thought they were in Siberia. She obtained work at the Mental Hospital in Brandon, and worked as an aide until retirement in 1987. Christine was courted by Joseph Polnick and they were married in 1948. That union brought their daughter Josephine, brightening both Joe and Chris lives. After renting a home, Joe with his friends, built their forever home, which Chris maintained meticulously with great pride. Josie married John Chumola in 1969, expanding the family. Chris embraced all the Chumola and Slobodian members as her own. Jeff was born in 1970, followed by Jason two years later, changing Chris priorities, dwelling in the love of her grandsons. Remaining to cherish the memory of Chris are son-in-law John Chumola, grandchildren Jeffrey Chumola, Jason (Nicole) Chumola; great- grandchildren Jacob and Taylor; nephews Ken, Terry, Bob Polnick and their families. She also leaves close friends Helen (Don) Scribner, Ann Chumola and neighbour Cecille. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sisters in Poland, her mother-in-law and father- in-law, husband Joseph and daughter Josephine Josie Chumola. The Funeral Service took place at Memories Chapel on Friday, December 4, 2015. Very Rev. Sr. Jerzy Urbanski of St. Josephs Polish National Catholic Church officiated. Pallbearers were Jeff, Jason, John Chumola, Bert Perey, Don Scribner and Terry Polnick. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Christine may be made to the St. Josephs Polish National Catholic Church, 1111 Assiniboine Avenue, Brandon, MB R7A 0G9 or to a charity of choice.
