HAMMOND: 1944-2016 Brian Edwin Hammond passed away on January 5, 2016 at Boissevain Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on October 3, 1944 at Brandon, Mb, to Edwin and Mildred Hammond. He lived his entire life at NE 22-4-19 until Brian and Marg retired to Boissevain in 2011. Brians dad; Edwin, passed away in 1951, so Brian learned about farming and chores at a very young age. He attended school at Hiawatha, Brandon, and Boissevain. He belonged to the Ninga 4-H club. In 1958 Roy Hammond (Eds brother) and Mildred were married. Roy and Brian farmed together for a number of years. In 1968, Brian married Margaret Sprott of Minto. They had 3 sons, Brad, Bob and Andy. Brian and Marg farmed together for 41 years, but because of Brians diagnosis, they rented the land out in 2009. One of the highlights of the farming years was the celebration of 100 years as a family farm in 1982. This was a glorious day enjoyed by community, family and friends. Although Brian retired in 2009, his heart was still at the farm. He spent countless hours in his shop with welding projects, inventions, repairing equipment, helping out his sons and grandchildren any way he could. Brian served as a councilor for the RM of Morton for 4 terms, a position he thoroughly enjoyed. Following his retirement from council, he continued to serve on the Conservation District board. Brian was truly a people person. He was a friend to everyone he met and always willing to lend a helping hand. We spent many hours having coffee on our deck after we moved to town. Brian felt so honored when people, young or old, waved or stopped for a chat. Brain was so proud of his sons and did everything he could to help get them established. His nieces and nephews have also been known to call on Uncle Brian for assistance. Brians 8 grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he had a special connection with each and every one of them. Brian is survived by his wife of 47 ? years, Margaret, his three sons, Brad (Candi) Dano, Brendan, Jordan and Kendall, Bob (Lisa) Jenny and Riley, and Andy, Brett and Jessa. His sisters Elva Ludgate and Dawn Guliani. He is also survived by sister in law Norma Sprott, sister in law Mary (Ronald) Kalberg, brother in law Tom (Janice) Sprott and numerous nieces and nephews. Brian was predeceased by his parents Ed Hammond, Mildred Hammond and step father Roy Hammond; his mother and father in law Alfred and Sylvia Sprott and brother in law Bob Ludgate, Owen Sprott and Rhoi Guliani. A memorial service was held on January 8, 2016 at St. Pauls United Church, Boissevain, with Rev. Milo Spooner Craig officiating. Donations in memory of Brian may be made to the Boissevain Health Centre Palliative Care Fund at Box 899, Boissevain, MB, R0K 0E0 or to the Boissevain and Morton Foundation, Box 1075, Boissevain, MB, R0K 0E0.I think Ill take the rest of the day off.
