HARKNESS: Peacefully at his residence, Hillcrest Place, our loving father Lawrence Herbert "Lorne" Harkness passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at the age of 96 years. Lorne was born, one of ten children, to Alymer and Laticia Harkness in Souris, Manitoba on August 9, 1919. He served in World War II, and after his return home, bought the land where he and his loving wife Shirley would raise their family. For sixty plus years they farmed there including: dairy cattle, then beef, followed by an array of animals of exotic chickens, sheep, goats and rabbits. Many hours were spent visiting and playing cards, a favorite pastime of Lorne's, around the table at the farm. Due to health reasons, he sold the farm in 2014. He then moved to Hillcrest Place where the staff enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor and became an extension to his already large family. Lorne always loved it when his family and friends stopped by for a visit or called just to chat. Lorne was predeceased by his wife, Shirley; son Floyd; daughter-in-law Judith; son-in-law John and granddaughter Michelle. Left to mourn his passing are his children: Bill of Melita, Manitoba, Larry (Donna), Lloyd (Shawna) all of Brandon, Cheryl of Crandall, Manitoba and Shawna (Ralph) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; daughter-in-law Linda of Calgary, Alberta as well as forty-two grandchildren. A private family graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Alexander Cemetery with Lydia Glawson officiating followed by a Memorial Reception at Memories Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #3, 824-18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 5B7. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
