HENDERSON: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of W.D. Wallace (Wally) Henderson of Hamiota, MB in his 80th year on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at his home with his wife Hazel by his side. Wallace was born on July 28, 1936 in Hamiota to Nelson & Minnie Henderson. He was raised on the family farm & attended school in Crandall, Hamiota & completed his Teacher Training at Brandon College where he met Hazel Hargreaves. Wallace and Hazel were married August 15, 1959. He began his teaching career in Virden and then he & Hazel began their married life in Manson where he also taught. Their teaching careers took them to Cardale and Inglis. In 1973, they returned to the family farm (Hazelgrove Farm) where Wally kept up his teaching skills in Rivers & later on by substituting whenever needed in Hamiota. Wally was very active in his community: umpiring baseball from an early age; as a referee for more than 40 years; taught more than 600 Hunter Safety students; was a director of the Hamiota Ag Society; longtime member of Parkissimo Odd Fellows & Rebekahs; Commissioner for Northwest Central Hockey league for many years and always willing to help out whenever needed. In 1995, Wallace was proud to be living on his familys homestead when they celebrated the Century Farm. Wallace & Hazel moved from the family farm into Hamiota in 1996 where he remained active in outdoor life: helping farmers during seeding & harvest; raising cattle; gardening & growing lilies, tulips & gladiolas; mowing Scotia cemetery; as well as continuing his passion for hunting & fishing. He spent countless hours with their neighbor Ken helping to rebuild stationary engines and build miniature engines. For several years, he participated with the Redcoats of the Northwest, travelling around Manitoba entertaining & educating people about the history of the RCMP and their lives in the 1880s. His enthusiasm for wildlife continued in town as he had numerous kinds of bird feeders, attracting many types of birds (& a few cats) but also his favorite hummingbirds. A private family graveside service was held at Crandall Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Glenna Beauchamp, followed by a celebration of his life with friends and family at the Hamiota Community Centre on May 5, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents Nelson & Minnie; parents-in-law Harold & Mable Hargreaves and brother-in-law Ron Rice. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 57 years, Hazel; children David (Ruth); Debbie (Ron) Maxwell; Dale (Char) & Diane (Sandy) Hopkins; sisters Laurel (Ernie) Remlinger and Marion (Garth) Nolan; sisters-in-law Ellen (Stu) Darr and Noreen Rice. Wally is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. For those desiring, donations may be made in Wallys memory to CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 228, Stn Main, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 9Z9 or to the Hamiota Agricultural Society, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0.
