BLACKWELL: Gladiolus Lydia (Glady) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Sherwood Personal Care Home in Virden on May 22, 2016 at the age of 93 years. Glady was born to Amos and Amy Tompkins on February 15, 1923 in Barnsley, MB. She married W. Vernon Blackwell on September 28, 1945. They farmed in Sanford and Griswold and retired off the farm to Oak Lake and later Virden. Glady worked at The Sherwood for 10 years before her retirement in 1988. Glady loved to cook, bake and sew quilts. She played music by ear and it was a large part of her life. She played the organ for the Oak Lake United Church and played in a band in Virden for several years. She even played the piano in The Sherwood in the last six months of her life. Glady also enjoyed a good game of cards. She loved her family and was a wonderful, caring mother, Grandma and Nana. Glady was predeceased by her parents, six sisters and one brother. She is survived by her daughter Lesa Rogers (Jack), son Clayton (Brenda), three grandsons Dustin (Karla), Chance Rogers and Jeffrey Blackwell (Krystal), three great grandchildren Tyran, Cianna and Grayson, one sister-in-law Norma Tompkins and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. A celebration of Glady’s life was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel in Brandon on May 26, 2016 followed by interment at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Urn bearers were Dustin and Jeffrey Blackwell and Chance Rogers. Donations in memory of Glady can be made to the Charity of your choice.
