SLIMMON: On Saturday, August 13, 2016, Betty Slimmon, age 84 years, passed away at her residence, Valleyview Care Centre. Betty Lorraine Carr was born on September 13, 1931 to Tom and Maggie Carr. She was the youngest of five children. After her schooling, Betty worked as a telephone operator in Shoal Lake. She met and married Laverne Slimmon on February 3, 1951 and together, they worked on the farm. In the early 1970's they moved from the farm to Swan River and managed a motel. They remained in Swan River for twenty-seven years and made numerous friends while living there. Betty and Laverne retired to Brandon to the Seniors Housing and then the last seven years they resided at Valleyview Care Centre. Betty was an avid gardener and enjoyed cooking, knitting and crocheting. She loved sports-playing fastball in the summer and curling in the winter. She was proud to be on the championship fastball team in the early 1950's and was a competitive curler. Her grandchildren's activities and achievements were always an interest to her. When they were able, Betty and Laverne enjoyed watching them participate. Family and friends meant a lot to Betty and she loved the family reunions. Betty is survived by her daughter Joan (Danny) Parthenay and her family: son Terry (Ruth), Austin, daughter-in-law Candace, Autumn, Carter and DJ Taylor-Luke, son Bryan (Melanie), Reid and Madeline; son Gary (Nadine) Slimmon and family: daughter Cindy (Ryan) Baliski, Paxton, son Kelly (Tanya) Slimmon, Ellie and Easton; daughter-in-law Norma Slimmon (Dave Little) and family: Scott (Jennifer) Slimmon, Breanna and Logan, son Kyle Slimmon. She also leaves one sister, Doreen; sisters-in-law Anne, Elaine and Lillian and brother-in-law Neil. Betty was predeceased by her parents; husband Laverne; son Randy; grandchildren Darryl and Crystal; brothers Wilfred, Bert (Wanda), Jack (Ida); in-laws Arnold (Greta), Merrill, Keith (Loretta), Frank (Myra) and brother-in-law Allan. Betty will also be sadly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A private graveside ceremony took place at the Hamiota Cemetery. Lydia Glawson officiated. A reception for family and friends was held at the Hamiota Community Centre, Hamiota, Manitoba, on Wednesday, August 17, 2016.
