CHOWN: Sophie Chown, age 100 years, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Hillcrest Place. Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd, her parents, Albert and Annie Ficek, sister Nell, and brothers Frank, Stan, and Joe. Sophie leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Carol (Ray) Wazney, and Janis (Wayne) Clark; sons Ron (Cheryl) and Ken (Carmen); six grandchildren, Brenda (Brad), David (Jenn), Laura (Trevor), Tracey (Jamey), Tara (Gary), and Drew (Tess), and eleven great-granddaughters, Breanne, Kristen, Jenna, Avery, Evalina, Gianna, Genevieve, Kate, Ellen, Piper and Pressley. She is also survived by sister-in-law Norma, and several nieces and nephews.Sophie was born October 2, 1916, and was raised on the family homestead at Kemnay, MB. After finishing her Grade 11, she moved to Brandon to find work. It was there that she met Lloyd, and they were married on October 19, 1941. They raised their family of four children, and enjoyed many family visits with the Chown and Ficek relatives, and also many trips to Minot and Detroit Lakes for summer vacations. When Lloyd died suddenly in September 1962, Sophie worked very hard to support her young family. Sophie enjoyed her garden, knitting, solving crossword puzzles, and keeping up with current events in her newspaper. She had a very special place in her heart for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed their visits, cards and letters. She remained very independent well into her 90's, when a fall necessitated her move to Hillcrest Place in 2010.The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at Hillcrest. We are so grateful for their kindness and loving care of our Mom. Our family was so blessed to all be together to celebrate her 100th birthday - a special thank you to Christina for her help and love. A private graveside ceremony officiated by The Venerable Paul Curtis was held at the Brandon Cemetery on October 21, 2016. Donations in memory of Sophie may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #3 - 2430 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, MB R7B 0M5 or to a charity of choice.
