She enjoyed curling in the ladies league and always had fun at the bonspiels. Mom enjoyed many activities during these years but her greatest pleasure came in being a wife and mother. She took pride in the restoration of their big brick home, the former Catholic Church Manse as well as providing her family with home cooked meals, baking and many outfits sewn on her sewing machine. She enjoyed being involved with her kids activities and spending summers at our cabin at Oak Lake. Following Dad’s sudden death in May 1976, Mom looked for new ways to fill her time. Following Charlie’s death in January 1990 Mom took up quilting, reconnected with many of her cousins, continued to enjoy sewing and maintaining her home. Mom moved into Hobb’s Manor in the fall of 2010 and enjoyed reconnecting with some old friends and making new ones, especially her 4th floor corner friends who were so good to her. After giving up her driver’s license, Mom was very fortunate to have her niece Gay Mayberry either take her shopping or do her shopping every Saturday. Mom looked forward to and enjoyed their time together. Mom took great pride in her ten Grandchildren. She loved hosting each group of Grandkids for their annual week of summer holidays at Grandma’s. Mom proudly displayed, in her home, apartment and even the Sherwood, her framing of their High School Graduation pictures. Grandma Doreen could be trusted with secrets and was a great listener therefore enjoyed hearing many of her Grandchildren’s stories over the years. Throughout her life Mom was an avid reader, a dedicated CBC radio fan and a lifetime subscriber to Maclean’s Magazine. As she finished each edition of Maclean’s she would pass it onto family, a neighbor or friends encouraging them to stay current on what was happening in the world around them.
