HARTEL: On Saturday, December 24, 2016 Earl Hartel passed away peacefully in his 98th year at his home, Hillcrest Place, Brandon, MB. Earl is survived by his wife of 69 years, Verla (Fleming), his children, Cheryle, Morley, Shelly and Darren their spouses and his grandchildren Brian, Suzanne, Andrew, Erika and Jackson, as well as his great-grandchildren, Adriana, Alexandra, Noah, Harry and Sophie. Earl was predeceased by his grandson Aaron, brothers, Milton and Howard and sisters Ethel and Myrtle and their spouses. Earl grew up in the West Deloraine area. He and Verla farmed at Deloraine until 1967. Shortly after leaving the farm and moving into Deloraine, Earl was employed by the former Antler River School Division as a Custodian at the Deloraine schools. Earl was a respected team member at the schools and he was loved by the staff and students. Earl was known for his “I can do it and get it done attitude”, Earl especially enjoyed the fellowship of the staff and one of his favourite sayings was “now I shouldn’t say but…….”. He was not immune to hearing or spreading a bit of the small town gossip. Earl loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and he was especially proud of their on the field and off the field accomplishments. He spent many hours helping with coaching and managing the numerous ball and hockey teams his children played on. He and mom spent many hours travelling to watch their games as well as his grandchildren’s games. Earl especially enjoyed fishing and catching more than his kids or the grandkids that were with him. He had that humourous knack of reminding us on our way home (and even the next day or two) how he had caught more. In 1989 Earl and Verla relocated to Brandon, and they enjoyed many years in their home on Aberdeen Avenue, the fellowship of the Central Community Centre, and the Brandon Drop In Centre. Earl and Verla, spent many hours Square Dancing and Old Time Dancing with their friends. They loved to travel, go camping and Dad especially enjoyed his trip to Denver to watch Darren play hockey and the family trips to Toronto and Minneapolis to watch the Blue Jays. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hillcrest Place for their loving care of “Our Dad”. Each and every one of them are special people and are to be commended for the tremendous care they provide everyday. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Earl may be made to a charity of choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
