TURNER: Howard Fredrick Turner, in his 96th year, passed away peacefully at Delwynda Court Personal Care Home, Deloraine, Manitoba, on December 3, 2016. Howard was born and raised in the Lauder area and spent his life farming on the family farm until his retirement in 1980. Howard’s only years away from the farm were during World War II. He enlisted in 1941 and arrived back to Lauder on New Year’s Day 1946. His years away were spent training with his regiment in several locations across Canada and England and served with the liberating armies in France, Belgium and Holland. In June 2016 Howard was honoured with a medal from the French government to express their profound gratitude for his personal involvement in the liberation of France during WWII. With the medal came the rank of Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour. He was very proud of this recognition and displayed his military medals at his home in Delwynda Court. Howard was predeceased by his wife Stella in 2007, brothers George, Norman and Art, and by his sisters Florence and Jean, and niece Margaret Aker. He leaves to mourn his nephews Bruce (June) Timms, George (Kim) Turner, Howard Wood, Norman (Joan) Wood, Stephen Aker and niece Kathy (Ken) Watson, and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews. A funeral service to celebrate Howard’s life was held in Lauder United Church on Monday, December 12, 2016 conducted by Rev. Doug Craig. Interment was held in the Lauder Cemetery prior to the funeral with family and the Legion Honour Guard who performed a dedication ceremony honouring Howard. The family wishes to thank Smith Funeral Home in Deloraine, Manitoba for their assistance; to the Lauder Auxiliary for the delicious lunch provided following the service; to Rev. Doug Craig for his reassuring words at the funeral and for the visits he made to see Howard. Thanks also to the people of the Lauder area for their unwavering support of Howard which is gratefully appreciated. A special thanks is owing to Dr. Brackenreid and the incredible staff of Delwynda Court for the compassion, care and support given to Howard during his time at the Home. The care provided is second to none and was a huge factor in Howard making an easy transition from independent living in his home to spending the last year and two months with the support and care of those who worked with him at Delwynda Court. Thank you so much. We are grateful for Howard’s life and the steadfast dedication he had to his small community of Lauder. He was very proud of his community and those who support its survival. If people so wish they may make a donation in Howard’s memory to the Lauder United Church or the Lauder Cemetery Fund.
