BARR: Richard William Barr, born February 6, 1934, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, left this world on August 20th, 2017, at his residence in Nanaimo, BC., following an extended period of declining health. He is survived by his seven children, Rhonda, Rick, Darrell (Emily), Darcy, Valarie, Alison and Andrea, eleven grandchildren, Shawn, Larissa, Amy, Elicia, Dylan, Aaron, Keely, Keenan, Harper, Daynen and Janna, three great-grandchildren, Saya, Caiden, and Coletyn, ex-wife Anna Pepper, sister Kathleen Smith (Ken), and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Norman (Alice). Richard grew up in the Carberry area and carried fond memories throughout his life of the many close friends and families of his childhood. He married Anna Jean McDonald and together they lived in Brandon where Richard was employed by the Motor Transport Board for over forty years until retirement. Notably, both Richard and his brother Norman achieved senior positions as Chief Inspectors for the province of Manitoba during their service. In younger years, he was an active member of the Brandon Lions Club and UCT, and an avid curler at the Brandon Country Club. Richard and his closest friends looked forward to their annual hunting trips to northern Manitoba. Later he took up downhill skiing and was not deterred by a broken ankle his first run down Sunshine mountain. Richard also enjoyed golfing and hiking, the latter being his favourite past-time that he especially enjoyed on Vancouver Island where he spent his years of retirement. Most of all, Richard cherished his time with family and friends. His dry wit and easy charm will be sadly missed and long remembered. A memorial service will be held in the fall in Manitoba.
