JOHNSTON: Bryan Johnston, 1938 - 2017. Sadly, we announce the passing of Bryan Johnston on September 16, 2017 at the age of 78 years. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Mary-Jo in 1969 at age 6 years, his parents Jack and Mary Johnston, and his brothers-in-law Gar Ash, Vince Kavic, Charlie McDonald and Ron Chabot. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Norma Dawn (Charlton), his sons Chad (Heather), and Ryan (Allison Robertson) and his cherished granddaughters Carlin and Rorie who affectionately called him Old Dad. Bryan will be missed by his brother Jack (Patti), sisters Marlene Ash, Trudy Chabot, Donna McDonald and Lynn Carmichael (Bill) as well as Normas brother George Charlton (Keiko See). Uncle Bud had a close relationship with his nieces and nephews who suffered his endless teasing over the years. Bryan was born December 5, 1938, at the family farm in the West Prospect Area (Portage laPrairie), the 4th child of Jack and Mary (Will) Johnston. He received his education at West Prospect School, St. Marys and Portage la Prairie Collegiate. He started work with Manitoba Power Commission in 1956 at age 17, as a lineman trainee. Upon receiving his JourneymanLinemans certification, he worked in Selkirk and Steinbach as an Assistant District Supervisor. In 1970, while stationed in Steinbach, he was taking training in Winnipeg as an Engineering Technician when he was involved in a car accident which left him a quadriplegic. Following six months of rehabilitation, Bryan and family moved to Brandon where he returned to work with the Brandon Operations Section of Manitoba Hydro. He retired in July, 1996, after forty years ofservice as the Capital Expenditure Accountant in the Financial Planning Section Western Region. After retirement, Bryan and Norma moved to Winnipeg to live closer to family, sharingin regular and frequent social gatherings with them. Family was all important to him and hebecame interested in tracing his roots, completing a Will family history with his cousin BobTaylor and a Johnston family history with cousins Charlie Stafford, Dennis Johnston and Joe Evans. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie. Respects can be extended as we celebrate and honour his life at an informal, come and go reception for family and friends at the Viscount Gort Hotel (Royal B Ballroom), 1670 Portage Avenue Winnipeg, on Thursday, September 21 from 2:00pm 4:00pm.
