BLACK: Linda Margaret Black (nee Northam) was born May 26, 1951 in Minnedosa, MB and passed away on October 1, 2017 at the age of 66 years. Linda was the first of six children born to John and Margaret Northam. She spent her first years on the farm and started Grade 1 at McBride School, halfway through the first grade, the family moved to Rapid City where Linda continued grade school then completed high school at Elton Collegiate. Throughout her youth Linda spent time with the West End Kids, the Brownies, 4-H, and High-C clubs and was very active in volleyball and curling while in high school and college. In 1969, Linda moved to Brandon to take the Clerical Bookkeeping and Office Machine course at Manitoba Institute of Technology (now ACC). It was here that she met her future husband, Ken Black. After college, Linda went to work at Manitoba Hydro as a clerk, but left in September of 1971 to get married. Linda worked at various jobs, usually as a bookkeeper, later returning to Hydro where she worked until retirement. In her retirement, Linda started a new venture opening the Mill Pond Tea House and Gift Shop in Rapid City. This was the highlight of her working life, a dream come true. Ken and Linda were married on November 6, 1971; in 1974 the couple bought their first home in Brandon before their daughter Christine arrived on May 6, 1975. A few years later, they bought a larger house in the Green Acres area to accommodate another child. In May of 1979, Michael joined the family, he was 18 months old. Apart from raising two children, Linda was an active member of the community involved with Trinity United Church, Green Acres School, Riverview Curling Club, making and selling crafts and decorating for innumerable events. Lindas love of history kept her busy researching and recording her familys, the Rapid City Veterans and the town of Rapid Citys historys. In 2004, Ken and Linda moved and settled into life in Rapid City surrounded by many new friends. After Kens retirement, they spent a few winters as snowbirds, on their trips Linda enjoyed taking pictures to document their travels and friends they met up with along the way. Retired life allowed for more trips to visit grandchildren, nieces, and nephews to attend some of their events and watch them grow up. Linda was predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret Northam. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Ken, daughter Christine (Brett), son Michael, her six grandchildren; Lane, Sarah, Taylor, Brooke, Kylie, and Rylan, four step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, sisters Barbara (Doug), Gwen, Elizabeth (Russel), and Carol (Bob), and her brother Alex (Kim), as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. The funeral service was held on Friday, October 6, 2017 from the Rapid City United Church with interment at the Rapid City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Minnedosa Palliative Care Service or the Rapid City and Area Community Fund, Brandon Area Community Foundation.
