CHALMERS: Ron Chalmers passed away in his sleep on February 5th, 2018 while enjoying life as a Winter Texan in Weslaco, Texas. Ron was a longtime resident of Brandon, and moved to Winnipeg 3 years ago. Ron was born on a farm near Creelman, Saskatchewan in 1929 and moved to the Pipestone district during the 1930s with his parents. He attended school at Virden Collegiate and was class Valedictorian in 1949. That year he was awarded the Governor Generals Medal for his academic accomplishments. Ron completed his education at Brandon University (B.A. 70; B.Ed. 71). His teaching career took him to various places in Southwestern Manitoba, including Parkland School near Elkhorn, Pipestone, Ninette, Westbourne and finally Brandon. He enjoyed a long career as an educator and school principal. He was school principal at Alexander, Green Acres and Earl Haig schools before his retirement in 1987. Ron was an active member of the Shrine Club of Brandon and enjoyed driving those Mini Mustangs in local parades. He loved his time at the family cabin at Pleasant Valley, which he hand built with his sons. Ron was predeceased by his first wife Marianne Chalmers (Hutton) and his second wife Arlene Chalmers (Tosh). He leaves to mourn his loving partner Joan Whyte of Winnipeg, his sons Brent (Vafa) and Scott (Silje) and his 5 grandchildren. Ron enjoyed life and made the most of his retirement. He travelled and explored the world. He was an avid golfer into his 80s and lived long enough to score his age on 18 holes. The day before his passing he was out and about; driving his electric scooter around Magic Valley Park where he had wintered for over 25 years. We will miss him badly, but his humour, love of stories and pleasure in life will always be a part of us. Funeral arrangements have yet to be made, but the family will host a celebration of Rons life in Brandon in the springtime.
