MACKAY: Laura Catherine; beloved wife of the late Gordon Mackay; mom to George; passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2018 at Fairview Personal Care Home, Brandon, MB, at the age of 98 years. Laura was born on January 6, 1920 in McAuley, Manitoba, the youngest child of Alexander and Eliza Ewing. She grew up on the family farm, south east of McAuley, and attended Hills Green School. During her teen years, the family moved off the farm and into the town of McAuley. She worked at various jobs in the McAuley area before moving to Brandon; where she worked as a housekeeper and then was employed at Knowltons Shoe Store. While working in Brandon, Laura met Gordon Mackay and they were married on July 7, 1951. They welcomed the birth of their son, George, in 1954. Laura was a stay at home Mom; she enjoyed bowling, playing shuffleboard and cards, especially crib. She was an avid sports fan watching baseball, hockey and curling on T.V. She was a long standing member of the Brandon Legion Branch #3 and helped with functions that were held at the Legion. She is survived by her son George (Judy) Mackay; grandchildren: Brittney Erickson (Tyler) and Braden (Louise Ferguson); and great granddaughter Hadley Erickson. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Gordon; her siblings: James, Helen, Mae, Jean, Janet, Allister, and Grace; as well as sisters and brothers-in-law. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Brandon Municipal Cemetery.
