DERENIWSKY:Marie Dereniwsky, 102, passed away on Monday, April 16th at the Birch Lodge Personal Care Home, Hamiota. Marie was born January 21, 1917 at Seech, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her parents Anton and Anne (Kaskiw) and her two brothers John and Joseph. She is survived by numerous cousins and other more distant relatives. She is also survived by Helen Gourlay (nee: Arnold), and Douglas Gourlay (Audrey) who was 2 years old when Marie came to the Gourlay farm. She was also very close to Doug and Audrey's family who visited Marie on a regular basis. Marie was very active in many community activities and especially during the Second World War when women of the community got together for quilting bees and other projects that were sent to Great Britain. She volunteered for over forty years and worked tirelessly in maintaining the cemetery at White Bank Lea. She competed for many years in numerous Agricultural Society Fairs throughout the area showing baking, crocheting, quilting, garden produce and grains. She won numerous awards. She was an excellent cook and baker but could also handle any kind of chore on the farm such as milking cows, stooking, and driving a grain truck at harvest. Picking wild berries and maintaining a large garden were her specialties. A funeral service will be held for Marie on Monday, April 22nd at the Oak River United Church, Oak River, Manitoba at 11:00 am with John Shaw officiating and interment at the White Bank Lea Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Gerald Gourlay, Robert Gourlay, Mike Martel, Thomas Heapy, Mark Gill, and Danny Wiltsie. If anyone wishes to make a donation in memory of Marie, in lieu of flowers they may do so to the Hamiota Birch Lodge Activities Fund, c/o Hamiota District Health Centre, Hamiota, Manitoba, R0M 0T0 or to a charity of their choice.
