HUGHES: Mary Hughes (Phillips) passed away at the Baldur Health Centre on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at the age of 95 years, Mary Hughes (formerly Phillips, nee Bedwell) of Glenboro, Manitoba, formerly of Brandon and of the Marchwell, Saskatchewan and the Russell, Manitoba area. Mary leaves to mourn her passing her son Brian (Janis) Phillips of Surrey, British Columbia, daughter Melinda (Klaus) Herrmann of Glenboro, four grandchildren Christine Phillips, Terrena (J.D.) Phillips, Jeremy (Pam) Herrmann, Patrick Herrmann; ten great grandchildren Sabrina, Lillian, Samuel, Alexandra, Adam, Amber, Jaxon, Rory, Chayne, Braylon as well as numerous extended relatives and friends. Mary was predeceased by her husband's Alfons Phillips and Dennis Hughes, son Sheldon Phillips, parents John and Emma Bedwell, brothers Bert, Charlie, Bill, Jim, John and by sisters Rita Bedwell, Margaret Roulston, Doris Ferguson and Nan Glass. Mary was born October 10, 1924 in the Ingelside District in Saskatchewan, the youngest of 10 children to John and Emma Bedwell. She began playing the piano at the age of 3 years and upon graduating high school continued her studies with Professor Shin at the University of Manitoba. After a brief stint as an office secretary, she accepted a teaching position in Russell, Manitoba and taught music for over 30 years. In 1974, Professor Lorne Watson asked if she would come to Brandon University to become an associate teacher of music, a position she held for 15 years. Throughout the years, she was an adjudicator at many festivals in Manitoba and played the organ at many Sunday Lutheran church services, funerals and weddings. Mary taught piano lessons to many students, up until she had a stroke at the age of 80 years. Music was a gift that Mary carried throughout her life and will continue on in those she had taught as well as her children and grandchildren. A Celebration of Mary's life will be held on Friday, November 1, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Willmor Chapel, Glenboro, with Pastor Laurel Seyfert of Brandon Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Parksville British Columbia.
