Lloyd was born in the house on the family homestead in South Junction on a sunny day, Sept. 1, 1929, to Casper and Bertha Ruud. He was the youngest of six children. He lived in that house on the homestead until he was 80 years old. At that time, he and Joan moved to Steinbach, MB.
As a boy he enjoyed playing hockey, working on the farm and gardening. He attended school in Sprague until Grade 11 and completed Grade 12 through correspondence courses. He met Joan Risley when he was 18 years old. They were married Nov. 15, 1949. Lloyd worked as a farmer and cut wood, and at Canada Packers in Winnipeg. In 1954, he joined the Canada Customs. He retired after 36 years of service.
Joan and Lloyd loved having a large family and followed each of their children and grandchildren in school and church events. They were huge sports fans. Joan and Lloyd enjoyed curling and won many bonspiels. Lloyd was active, volunteering in service organizations including The Sons of Norway in Roseau, MN, the Ross L. Gray School board, the Lions Club and was the Eastman Senior Games coordinator through Sport Manitoba. He enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, photographing and taking movies of family and events. He also enjoyed woodworking, music, traveling, coffee and lefse!
