ANNE UNGER

On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Bethesda Place in Steinbach, MB, surrounded by family, Anne Unger peacefully passed into the hands of her Lord at the age of 100 years.

Anne was prede-ceased by six sisters, Helen, Sara (Peters), Justine, Katherine, Mary (Voth) and Betty, as well as two brothers, Cornelius and George.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Anne was born on Apr. 25, 1918 in Alexanderpol, Russia and immigrated with her family to Canada in 1924 and settled in Morden, then later bought a farm in Steinbach. Anne and her siblings farmed for many years and ultimately sold the farm and moved into the thriving town of Steinbach. She often said it was “worth the trip”!!!

She lovingly dedicated the rest of her life volunteering and helping others. The Steinbach Mennonite Church was her second home and where her heart was. She willingly took on any task that was given to her whether it was quilting, cooking, baking, serving at weddings or funerals, or simply being there for anyone who needed her loving care.

As well as being a pillar in the church, she also loved spending time in her garden and helping at the Mennonite Heritage Village. Many neighbours, friends and family received the bounty of her gardens over the years. She also played a major part in aiding with the immigration of numerous Laotian families. Once these families were in Canada, she continued supporting them in the same loving way she lived her entire life.

Anyone who knew Anne would know of her quick wit and incredible sense of humour. In her later years, suffering from osteoporosis, a comment was made of her getting shorter in stature and she replied that she was “downsizing”. She would often refer to her medication as “marijuana”, and as she was always happy, we often wondered what it really was. But that was just her natural way of bringing joy into every room she ever entered. While in Bethesda, the staff and residents quickly got to know her and couldn’t help but love her the way all the rest of us did.

We’d like to thank all the staff at Bethesda Place for the wonderful care they provided Anne and a special thank you to Rev Peter Harms, Chaplain Larry Hirst and Pastor Lee Hiebert for the endless hours they spent with Anne, which she cherished.

We have been very blessed to have Anne in our lives and she will be missed dearly. We can only imagine the celebration in heaven when she showed up. Bless You Anne.

The funeral service for Anne was held on Monday, July 30 at 2 p.m. at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach, MB, with viewing prior to the service. The burial followed at the Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethesda Place Personal Care Home, 399 Hospital St, Steinbach, MB, R5G 0E6.
