HARRY PETERS
Harry Peters, age 78, of Steinbach, MB, passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness, on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.
Harry is survived by his beloved wife Kathy, their daughter Roberta and son Todd (Katherine). He is also survived by his son-in-law Tim Loughrin, grandchildren Natalie (Joel), Graham (Taeghen), Nolan and Finley, nephew Dwayne Peters, and numerous other extended family members.
Growing up in Mitchell, Harry had many happy memories working on the farm with his father, helping with the dairy as well as doing field work. Harry and Kathy were married July 31, 1965.
He started his career in car sales at Penner Dodge. Years later, he owned his own business, a Mazda franchise and later AMC. He was a member of the Manitoba Auto Dealers Association and won the “Time Magazine Dealer of the Year” award in November 1985, among other prizes. He retired from car sales in 1988 and started a rooftop balloon advertising company. Later, he turned to commercial real estate and land development in Mitchell.
Harry felt it was important to serve within the community. He was involved with the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce. He helped patent the slogan “It’s worth the trip!” for the city. The Kinsmen and Lions clubs also kept him busy.
His retirement was filled with many hours of playing golf. In his last several years, Harry and his golf friends would tee off around 6 a.m. and finish 18 holes, leaving a full day for other interests.
Harry loved to travel. He and Kathy travelled to over 50 countries. Their last trip together was on a safari in Africa. In their retirement, they enjoyed being snowbirds, with their latter years being mainly spent in Orlando.
He accepted Jesus as his Saviour in the late 1980’s. He was a faithful attender at Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church, as well as at churches in Florida where they spent their winters. He supported his home church and their missions in Bolivia and Cuba and also served as an usher.
Thank you to Dr Krahn and the medical team at Bethesda Hospital. Thank you also to the homecare workers and to Silver Lining Care who assisted and cared for him while at home.
A come-and-go viewing will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 7-8 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, MB.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church, 360 McKenzie Ave, Steinbach, MB.
