JOHN W. KATHLER
April 19, 1935 – May 5, 2017
John Kathler, beloved husband of Eleanor, was ushered into his eternal home on Friday, May 5, 2017. John was born April 19, 1935 to Wilhelm and Amalia Kathler at their farm home near Arnaud, Manitoba.
John leaves to mourn: his wife of 55 years, Eleanor, daughter Jacqueline with Ed Neufeld, son Tim with Kim, and son Mark; grandchildren: Sam Neufeld with Liz Bend, Mim Neufeld with Casper Sela, Anna Neufeld, Thayne Kathler, and Rena Kathler; four brothers: Fred and Susan, Walter and Cathy, Rudy and Kay, Art and Margaret; two sisters-in-law Elly Kathler and Beth Kathler, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
John was a farmer, welder, long distance trucker, and custom harvester. He was a hard worker with an inventive and creative mind. John was baptized upon confession of his faith at the Arnaud Mennonite Church and in August 1961 married Eleanor Enns. They lived in Arnaud for 24 years until 1985 when the family moved to Steinbach where John was employed by Penner Transfer. In 1988, he retired from trucking due to rheumatoid arthritis. While living in Steinbach John and Eleanor enjoyed winter trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and Texas. It became difficult to maintain the house and yard after John’s first stroke in 2007, so in 2008 they moved to Lions Manor in Stonewall. John enjoyed the men’s coffee groups in Steinbach and Stonewall. He was known as “the man on the red scooter.” His scooter provided years of priceless mobility, independence, and fun with his grandchildren.
In 2014, John moved to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. He often commented on how much he appreciated the excellent and compassionate care he received there. We, the family, are grateful to the staff, Dr. Tunovic, and Dr. Graham for their care.
The memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Steinbach Mennonite Church. A family committal service will take place prior to the memorial service.
If so desired, donations in memory of John W. Kathler may be made to Bethania Spiritual Care, MCC, or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
