Wilhelm (Bill) Schroeder of Steinbach, MB, passed away at Rest Haven on Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2017, and is now safe in the arms of Jesus.
He will be lovingly remembered and is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen; their seven children, Stan (Laurie), Wayne (Carol), Clarence (Shirley), Patty (Guy), Bev (Woody), Sandra (Terry), and Glenn (Teressa); 16 grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. He is also survived by two brothers, one sister, numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by son Richard, his parents Dietrich and Elizabeth Schroeder, and siblings Mary Remple, David, Henry, Dietrich, Phillip, John and Cornie.
Bill was born at home in Halbstadt and grew up in Halbstadt, Ste Anne and Pansy, MB. At age 15, his family moved to Paraguay where he met and married his wife Helen and three of their sons were born. They moved back to Canada in 1963 where Bill got his GED, plumbing and gas fitting tickets. He worked as a plumber/gas fitter in many interesting places including Fort Chipewyan, Churchill and several First Nation communities. He worked on the pipeline in Fort McMurray until age 75.
Dad loved to fish and spent many hours trying to catch the big one. He did things his way and was strong minded and independent. He loved his family and found great joy in his grandchildren. He spent many happy mornings with the men’s coffee group at Rocco’s. Dad’s unique sense of humour and snappy comebacks kept us laughing right until the end.
The viewing will take place on Friday, Mar. 10 at 7 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. at the Steinbach Mennonite Church.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Steinbach Mennonite Church with interment at Heritage Cemetery.
Many thanks to the kind and caring staff at Rest Haven and Bridgepark Manor.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bill may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB.
