NORMAN FRIESEN PLETT
March 5, 1943 – February 24, 2017

On Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, Norman F. Plett passed away peacefully at his home, at the age of 73.

Norman is survived by his loving wife Heidi of 47 years; three sons, Ian (Ruby), Lennie, and Clinton (Krystal); his sister Kathy Peters (Harry), brother Nathaniel Plett (Lucille), and their families.

Norman was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Gertrude Plett, one sister Clara Doerksen (Gerry) and younger brother Delbert Plett.

Norman grew up enjoying the company of many families that lived on “Plattehof”, where his father and brothers had established Plett Company, which included a box factory and many other enterprises. Norm was born on the yard during a winter storm on Mar. 5, 1943. He lived there all his life and lately, as his health deteriorated, he would often remark that he would like to stay on the yard till the end. His wish came true.

Norm accepted the Lord when he was seven, on a trip to Three Hills, AB, while visiting his sister Clara at Prairie Bible Institute. Over the years his journey with the Lord had many ups and downs, but he stayed faithful till the end. Norm lived by Proverbs 30:7-9.

His first job was with Fast Brothers, where he enjoyed operating big equipment when he was in Grade 10. He continued working in road construction and bush camps for a number of years, well into the fall semester each year at school. Norm was clever enough though to complete both Grade 11 and 12 in half a year. While working construction for B.F. Klassen, Norm met his wife Heidi in Sandy Lake, ON in 1967. Norm and Heidi started their life together Aug. 2, 1969 and lived on the “Plattehof” yard in a house trailer.

While working in the roofing business, Norm began attending the University of Manitoba taking summer courses. In 1973, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Economics. With job offers on the table, Norm chose to stick with his blue collar roots and in 1975 he started his own hog business, buying the family property. Norm’s journey continued with the birth of his three sons in the next few years and then settled into family life as a father, husband, and hog farmer. As soon as his oldest son Ian was ready to participate in hockey and baseball, Norm started his coaching career. Norm did all he could to be the best coach to the team and to his sons during his 16-year career; he indeed succeeded. In 1992, Norm became a municipal councillor for the R.M. of Hanover in Ward 3. He enjoyed this position for 14 years, providing a strong voice for his ratepayers, continuously having their best interests in mind.

His wife Heidi has had the pleasure and enjoyment of his presence over the years with his gentle and kind demeanor, great sense of humor, and total commitment to his family and community; he is missed immensely.

Norman’s life will be celebrated Thursday, Mar. 2 with a funeral service at 2 p.m. at the Ridgewood Church, with viewing before the service, burial on the church yard, and a luncheon after.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Norman may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses or to a charity of your choice.
