MENNO THIESSEN
December 15, 1932 – January 22, 2017

Menno Thiessen was born December 15, 1932 to Peter and Mary Thiessen at Greenland, MB. Menno’s early years and schooling took place in the Blumenhof, MB area with his final three years of school taken in Saskatoon, SK. Having completed his education after sixth grade, Menno’s family returned to Giroux, MB where he worked for his dad on the farm. As a young adult, he worked as a truck driver, lumberjack, and carpenter at Steinbach, MB.

On May 23rd, 1954, Menno married his life long companion and friend, Jessie Giesbrecht of Steinbach. In 1958 they moved with their young family to the Heron District near Maryfield, SK. Menno worked as a carpenter for some years and they farmed in the area until they retired to Virden, MB in 1996.

Menno suffered a heart attack at the young age of thirty-four and some five years later, had a stroke which led to ongoing health and emotional issues.

Menno and Jessie were blessed with four sons and five daughters, subsequent spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly and prayed for faithfully.

Menno’s retirement years in Virden were filled with visits from family and friends, coffee outings, yard work, and touring the farming countryside. Due to declining health, his later years were more sedentary and he enjoyed reading, phone calls, watching inspirational programs, hockey, and horse races on TV, and time spent in the sunroom with Jessie. He was devoted to prayer for those individuals and missions close to his heart and leaves a legacy of rich Christian example and devotion to His Savior.

Having fought a good fight, having finished the course, Menno kept the faith and was peacefully ushered ‘Home’ on Sunday, January 22, 2017, at the age of 84 years. He is survived by his wife Jessie and their children, Bob (Mary), Marion (Murray Gray), Marvin (Brenda), Lester (Sharon), Barbara (Paul Stobbe), Wendy (Gary Tschetter), Karen (Howard Friesen), Howard (Myrna) and Abigail (Rod Abrahamson), 37 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. An inspirational funeral service and interment were held at the Kola EMC Church in Kola, MB.

Arrangements by Carscadden Funeral Chapel, Virden.
